OCCURRENCE: breeding resident. CHARACTERISTICS: brown head and back, white belly and tufts in flanks; relatively long and thin beak; grey legs. FOOD: aquatic invertebrates. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: wading bird; restless behaviour, often shakes its tail.
