OCCURRENCE: breeding resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: brownish back, head and breast; black and white wings; thick beak.
FOOD: seeds; occasionally insects.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: terrestrial; one of the first birds to vocalize in the early morning, usually in visible places like treetops.
