OCCURRENCE: breeding resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: dark dorsum; long light neck; long black beak; black plumes on cheeks and black crest on top of the head.
FOOD: fish, crustaceans, insects and small amphibians.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: wading bird; during the breeding season usually swims in pairs.
